Man smiling with nicotine pouches

Key Takeaways

  • Sweden has lowest rate of smokers and related deaths in Europe
  • Sweden has 90 smoking-related deaths per 100,000 per year
  • The UK is not expected to become smoke-free until 2033
  • Bans will not help the UK become smokefree–but nicotine alternatives will
  • 20,000 lives could be saved in the UK by switching to nicotine alternatives

The film is based on the reports Fighting Smoking with Alternative Nicotine Products and The Race Towards a Smoke-Free Society, both by the Swedish economist David Sundén.

In the film, Andrew Murray from Haypp explains how Sweden has achieved Europe’s lowest rate of smokers and smoking-related deaths.

This has been accomplished thanks to alternative nicotine products, such as snus and nicotine pouches, and, importantly, without draconian laws or exceptionally high taxes.

The film highlights the major differences between the two countries. In Sweden, fewer than 5% of people smoke, while nearly 12% still do in the UK.

Despite some progress, the UK is lagging far behind Sweden and is not expected to become smoke-free until 2033.

If more Britons chose alternative options, many lives could be saved each year. According to Andrew:

“The real breakthrough happens when people gain access to alternatives like snus. We mustn’t allow politicians to legislate away these opportunities.”
